Monkey King Tattoos owner/artist Jeff Tam has been interested in tattoos at a very young age. He learned to tattoo on himself and his friends when they were in high school. Learning by the fire, and studying the craft while practicing the trade of tattoos; he decided to further his tattooing career after completing an Economics Degree at the University of British Columbia. Over the past eight years Jeff has traveled and honed his craft from Miami to Japan and the Czech Republic.
Jeff views his art through his culture and specializes in tattooing Asian imagery and mythology. He approaches his art with feng shui, using this insight to create designs with traditional elements and characters. He likes to tattoo large and ornate pieces covering the entire arm or back. These elaborate tattoos are like garments in themselves. He is interested in the body-suit or "tuxedo" tattoo where almost all the skin is covered.
Jeff offers this advice to folks considering a first tattoo. "Have that idea where you can't live without it. You got to have that." Once you have a clear idea of what you need, Jeff can help you design a tattoo image using your ideas and his large catalogue of artwork and images. When the day for the sitting comes, be well rested and fed and ready to relax.
The way I Charge: I wish I could tattoo everybody, but I only have a pair of hands. It takes an incredible amount of time, effort, concentration to research and design each piece of artwork before it is applied to the skin. In return, I wish to see every project finished and in good timing. However, financial situations may cause some people not able to complete the project until many years down the road. When this happens, it is difficult to match certain shades or colors because we constantly evolve with different inks and techniques to give us better results. I have had a waitlist for many years, but now I would like to prioritize collectors that are most serious about completing their project in good timing and already have all the the funds sorted out. This way there are no missed appointments due to finances and all we have to focus on is getting the end result of a beautiful tattoo. I only charge by the piece, and price depends on if it's color/black and grey, size of the area and the amount of details. I take half the qouted price for the deposit(non-refundable) to start the process of design and to book all the required sessions to complete. The remainder of the balance will be taken on the first session.
